OSR: The Monster Overhaul is the Best RPG of 2023 (according to some people)

According to this list from GeekNative, The Monster Overhaul was the 6th bestselling fantasy RPG on DriveThruRPG in 2023.

That's astonishing, considering the other works on the list! I'm delighted that people are enjoying the book.

I don't run advertisements or manage a marketing campaign for my books. The Monster Overhaul relies on word-of-mouth recommendations and unsolicited reviews. I'm grateful to everyone who's taken the time to recommend the book, talk about it on a podcast, review it on youtube, post about it on whatever forms of social media remain, order it at their local game store, or shout about it from the rooftops. After many years of work, it's amazing to see the book out in the real world, helping GMs everywhere.

Polygon: The best tabletop RPGs we played in 2023

The Monster Overhaul, by Skerples, reimagines not just the monsters, but the very notion of what a bestiary can and should be. The book is divided into 20 categories, each containing 10 critters that hew to a theme. The categories are unusual: There is “Dragons,” of course, but also “Summer” and “A Wizard Did It.” “Summer” monsters include the Froghemoth and Pyromancers. Some of these may sound similar to classic D&D monsters, others are entirely new. Tables galore help build and flesh out encounters. “Summer” has a set of generic swamp hexes; other entries have lairs and dungeons. There is an entire flowchart table for populating a megadungeon. Every page of this book is designed to make the reader think about monsters, how to make them feel new, or to recontextualize them, or to simply subvert player expectations. Like all great RPG supplements, The Monster Overhaul not only offers answers for these questions and more, it also teaches the reader how to continue answering them long after these published tables and suggestions are exhausted. A monstrous achievement that should be on every GM’s shelf.

Cockatrice Nuggets CN230: Best RPG Books of 2023

This might be my favorite release for 2023. I have gotten more use out of this book than most of the things I have bought this year. I have gotten more use out of this book than probably the 5E Monster Manual, and I ran 5E for a long time. This book is not just monsters. [...] The way this book is put together makes a lot of sense to me. The stuff that's in here! Most of these monsters have a lair attached with them. If they don't have a lair they have something else. [...] There is so much good stuff in this book that I keep coming back to it. This is my new monster manual. When I want a monster, I come here first.

OSR: The Monster Overhaul Is Now Available

The Monster Overhaul: A Practical Bestiary is now available for general sale!

Check out The Monster Overhaul Megapost for reviews, links, and other information.

I'm at the stage of my DMing career -- in the neighborhood of 40 years, yikes -- where I want things to be immediately useful at the table. (I have inspiration for days at this point, thanks.) A book that instantly gives me a list of names for NPCs when my players would rather talk than fight, a random table of colorful descriptions, other things that answer the needs of an actual DM playing the actual game? Yes, please.

Too many books seem to have never been playtested and, moreover, have little to no connection to how they will be used in actual play. This is the exact opposite of that, and I love it.

OSR: The Monster Overhaul Megapost

The Monster Overhaul is now on sale. Tell your friends! Heck, tell your enemies.

Check out these retailer lists to see if your local game store can order a copy.

What’s a Sphinx without a riddle, or a Minotaur without a labyrinth? What’s a Dragon without a hoard, or a Peasant without a grievance?

The Monster Overhaul is a massive Role Playing Game bestiary designed for at-table utility. Monsters are presented alongside useful tools, ready for immediate use in any scenario.

This book aims to provide a GM with the tools they need, as they need them, without slowing down a session. In the middle of a game, a GM doesn’t need to be told that Bears live in caves or that Ghosts haunt graveyards. They know that. What they need are interesting prompts that are difficult to invent under pressure; names, details, motivations, secrets, riddles, maps, twists, etc.

Numbers are calibrated around old-school fantasy adventure game principles. This book should be compatible with, and has been tested against, the most popular and enduring old-school systems.

This 336 page book contains:

  • 200+ Monsters.
  • 160+ Pieces of original art.
  • 20+ Maps.
  • Random encounter tables, indexes, and a host of other useful tools.

Editing by Dai Shugars.

Art by Lucas Roussel, Robin Carpenter, Iguanamouth, Logan Stahl, Ash Rudolph, Nadhir Nor, Crim_Reaper, Naf, Luka Rejec, Erin Kubo, Conor Nolan, Frenden, Scott Wegener, and Dyson Logos.

Reviews

The Monster Overhaul (Skerples): From art to organization, this is shaping up to be to monster manuals as Tomb of the Serpent Kings is to dungeon adventures - the sort of thing that takes the fundamentals and applies long-needed functionality updates.

It’s amazing. Lots of fun. Very thoughtful. Incredibly actionable. Basically my go to Monster Manual at my table.

-Reddit user acluewithout

It's a massive, useful, inspiring bestiary, and it's applicable no matter what fantasy game you run. Seek it out.

All around a great tool, broadly useful, but opinionated enough in it's decisions to avoid being a milquetoast kind of generic. One of the few monster books that covers the entire "generic fantasy rpg" gamut, while being actually a useful tool.

To make best use of it you will probably want to be playing a Dungeons and Dragons style game, but I think even if you're running something like a pulp or sci-fantasty type game you'll be able to get mileage out of it.

-Josh G

As if I'd been waiting for it for 40 years. If you must keep only one, this is this one. This book should be mandatory. What a monster manual should always have been. Instant classic.

-The Merry Mushmen

Absolutely gorgeous, superb quality materials, and I am in love with the "old school" artwork. This is one of those rare TTRPG items that cut out all the fluff and wasted space, this book is so crammed with information WoTC would have split it into 4 middling volumes. Lives up to its name, a proper overhaul of bloated systems condensed and packed expertly into a single volume.

-PibbleFiasco

What a wonderful book - absolutely chock full of useful, inspiring ideas. Clearly a labour of love from the author and sets a very high bar. Well done, its a triumph!

-Ken McLennan

I have to say that this is absolutely one of the best quality books I've ever owned. Truly an amazing physical specimen. Also, it's my new favorite bestiary and it's going to take a LOT to de-throne this thing. Amazing.

-Robert Wiberg

This is one of those books that, when it showed up and I cracked the cover and flipped through it, I was immediately like, "Oh, I need to not flip through this. I need to set this aside because I need to devote a bit of time and space. I need to respect the book, because it's capital I Important." And I think that my gut reaction is correct. I think that this is a fantastic repurposing and reimagining of monster manuals... There is such an abundance of thought on display for every single monster.

-Vintage RPG Podcast

That book is absurdly good. Even after reading so many glowing reviews it still exceeded my expectations. The way the book is organized, the quality of writing, the usefulness both at the table and in advance, it’s probably the best monster manual I’ve ever seen, full stop. I can’t recommend it enough.

Why?

I wanted to create a utility-focused monster manual with a ton of cool art, useful maps, and handy tools. Planning started back in 2019; check out the tag for more WIP posts and background information. After many years of work, it's amazing to see the book out in the real world, helping GMs everywhere.

The Monster Overhaul - Kickstarter Update 2

The Monster Overhaul's kickstarter campaign is going well. Just 11 days left to back and get a copy of a bestiary unlike any other.

We've passed some fun stretch goals, so some tiers will get sticker sheets, an art card, and an alarming die-cut Owlbear sticker.

If you're still not convinced, check out some example pages. Just two of the 200+ monsters and one of the 20+ generic locations in the book.

I've tried to design the Monster Overhaul for maximum utility. It's a toolbox that should, ideally, hand GMs the tools they need, as they need them, without slowing down a session or requiring a lot of page flipping.

The Monster Overhaul - Kickstarter Update

One week in and the Monster Overhaul is 400% funded! Thank you all for your support!

We reached the stickers stretch goal, so backers at some tiers will get two sheets of lovely Iguanamouth stickers. The Generic World Map is now free for anyone to use under a creative commons license. We also added two risograph prints to the unexpectedly popular Ancient Dragon tier.

Lucas Roussel illustrated a Height Chart that will be included in the index section of the book.

And we've announced two new stretch goals.

Stretch Goal Philosophy

The goal was, from day one of development, to make the book as useful as possible. If there's a tool, a map, or a concept that I could include in the book, I included it. I'm not holding concepts hostage behind an arbitrary funding number.

On the other hand, there could be something I've missed. If you don't see a useful tool or concept listed in the campaign, or if you disagree with some element of the Elemental preview (heh!), then let me know!

News From Around The Internet

Dave Thaumavore put out a video that includes some very kind words for the Monster Overhaul.

Portals and Pegasi has a very in-depth monster-by-monster review of the Elemental preview.

RPGsandbox has a tumblr post summarizing the campaign. If you're on tumblr, feel free to do tumblr things to it. Wait, let me rephrase...

And shoutouts in various newsletters and forum posts, including the first Bastionland Presser and the OSR News Roundup (very kindly, since by coincidence we're both running bestiary kickstarters).

The Monster Overhaul - Kickstarter Is Now Live

It's finally here!

What’s a Sphinx without a riddle, or a Minotaur without a labyrinth? What’s a Dragon without a hoard, or a Peasant without a grievance?

The Monster Overhaul is an old-school utility-focused bestiary that I've been working on for the past few years. It's a ludicrously ambitious project. 200+ monsters. Tons of original art. Random encounters. Useful tools. Indexes. Variants. Maps. Everything I could think of to improve its at-table utility.

And now, finally, you can pledge money to make it exist. Check out the campaign for more information, or follow this tag back to see the project's origins.

Assorted pages from the book. Note: pages are not in order.

Praise and Hype

This looks like just the thing I've hoped RPG bestiaries would transition towards: no fuss, gameable material, no bloated 'ecology' fluff, lots of options for distinguishing and reskinning different monsters, emphasising GM choice and creativity over a unified authorial 'canon'.

OSR: The Monster Overhaul - Launch Announcement

What's a Sphinx without a riddle, or a Minotaur without a labyrinth?

The Monster Overhaul is a system-neutral utility-focused bestiary that I've been working on for the past few years. It's a ludicrously ambitious project. 200+ monsters. Tons of original art. And fairly soon, you will be able to exchange money for a copy.

OSR: Indexing and Intuition

Indexing is a difficult art. I've written about categorization before, but index formats deserve a closer look.

The man who publishes a book without an index ought to be damned 10 miles beyond hell, where the Devil himself cannot get for stinging nettles.
— John Baynes

Say I gave you a list of fruits and furniture (apple, chair, desk, plum, banana, etc.) and asked you to order it, without any further guidance.

You might divide methods like this:

  • Obvious-useful: alphabetical and alphabetical by category.
  • Obvious-not useful: alphabetical by last letter, grouped by first vowel.
  • Not obvious - not useful: grouped by things that remind you of your father, categorized as bourgeois and non-bourgeois items.
  • Not obvious - useful: oldest word to most recent, language of origin.

"Obvious" in this case means "immediately and without any further thought or outside knowledge." We can split hairs over what counts as outside knowledge and what counts as utility, but you get the general idea. While a book should contain some obvious-useful indexes, it's important - especially for RPG books - to consider non-obvious useful indexes. Lateral approaches. Ways to mark entrances. Ways to increase conceptual density.

The "Solve My Problems Sheet" from Magical Industrial Revolution has received favourable reviews. I didn't invent the idea, but it's the sort of thing I'd like to see in more books.

The Monster Overhaul

Here's some of the methods I'm using to index the Monster Overhaul.

The Alphabetical Index of All Monsters is a fairly obvious index. It's just a list. Short alphabetical list at the front of the book, long one at the back.

The HD(NA) section (direct PDF link) (original post) is an interesting concept. Listing monsters by their HD is obvious, but the results in most books tend to be simple bulleted lists under HD headers. HD(NA) tables are a list of related monsters combined with HD tables. They're an extravagant waste of page space... but I feel like it's worth it.

The Generic Megadungeon is my replacement for Dungeon Level tables. You know, the ones that everyone ignores. They're typically a series of weak random encounter tables split up by arbitrary difficulty. Turning the table into a map of a physical space made sense to me, even if it's not a complete index. I could add references for the various Generic Locations in the book (i.e. the Generic Space Wreck, the Generic Lich Lair), but since the page # references will get the reader close to those maps anyway it feels unnecessary.

The Index of Monster Utility (very WIP) is a sort of Solve My Problems sheet for the Monster Overhaul.

And finally, there's the Celestial Index of Benevolent Knowledge. A monstrous book deserves a monstrous index.

2021/08/18

OSR: The Alphabetical Index of All Monsters

The Monster Overhaul will have several useful indices. There's a basic table of contents, of course, and the HD(NA) section has already been posted, but since the book is designed to cover a lot of possible monsters, an Index of All Monsters is mandatory.

It can't contain all monsters, of course, but the goal is to include every monster a reader is likely to look up in an index. The name is a bit of a joke.

Chaos Frogs by Naf

Not Wanted On The Voyage

Lake Monsters
Every lake has a mysterious serpent-like beast that allegedly sinks small boats but is otherwise harmless. It'd be easier to list the lakes that don't have a legendary inhabitant. Between the dinosaur craze of the late 1800s and the cryptid fads of the '60s and '70s, depictions became homogenized and suitable for town logos and tourism marketing.

Ape Monsters
It's a similar story for ape-like humanoids. I've included the best-known ones, but monster lists are full of "evidence" for a worldwide secret clan of hairy humans.

Side Note: the other potential issue is that some hairy human tales are just racism/xenophobia that the folklorist didn't pick up on. "Those weird semi-human primitive hill creatures that we hate" sometimes turn out to be actual people.

Clearly Fictional Monsters of Allegory
Bicorn and Chichevache are perfect examples. Creatures that were originally allegorical but gained new associations over the years are fine; creatures that are nothing but allegory are not.

Creatures That Don't Do Anything
If a creature doesn't do anything more supernatural than a cow producing milk or a pepper plant producing pepper, and if it isn't actively dangerous to people, it's probably not worth including. A venemous snake with two heads is interesting, but it doesn't need stats.

Singular Creatures
If a creature only appears in one source, and hasn't been widely reinterpreted or discussed, it's probably not worth indexing. Anyone who knows of the creature should also have a good idea what sort of stats it needs. Famous named dragons, for example, probably don't need to be listed by name.

Nebulous Creatures and Gods
If a creature created a mountain range, regularly devours the sun, or exists everywhere, it's probably not something stats can adequately cover. I've included the Demigod entry just in case. If a creature's motivation, form, and abilities change with every tale, it's probably too difficult to incorporate into an index.

Fully Fictional Creatures
Unless a creature appears in at least 2 RPG sources and another type of work (a video game, the original novel, etc.), it's probably not worth indexing. Some of the phonemic soup creatures from White Dwarf are definitely not worth revisiting. "You encounter [rolls] an Abrogalsid, which is different from an Agrobalsid in several very boring ways. Roll for initiative."

I also want to steer clear of copyright issues (even though indexing, with the right caveats, is a perfectly fine use case). Wizards of the Coast Product Identity creatures are right out.

Other Indexing Concerns

Via wikipedia.

Fidelity
The Grootslang is just a "great snake"; one of many such snakes. Since the early 2000s, thanks to the internet and a misread reference, it's become an elephant-featured snake instead of an elephant-sized snake, and developed a host of new abilities largely unrelated to its original myth.

Which version should I index? The "correct" one, or the new (and more interesting, from an RPG point of view) one?

Similarly, Gygax's Gorgon in the original Monster Manual is Topsell's error, perpetuated by Freund. Should I index Gorgon as "see Catoblepas" or "see Medusa" or both? Gorgon->Catoblepas is only a valid reference because of D&D, but the Monster Overhaul is a D&D-type book.

There's no correct answer. Every story about a creature, even if it's a real creature, is still a story. It's turtles all the way down.

It sounds trite, but mythology was not written for RPG purposes. Creatures were written, adapted, or changed for specific reasons, but until very recently those reasons did not include "What happens if some imaginary people in a collective story framework bolted to a random number generator encounter this monster?"

-What to Include in the Monster Overhaul?

All Wights Reversed
Not all two-word creature names have their reverse doubles in the index. Readers are unlikely to look up "Tortoise Tsar" by "Tsar, Tortoise" (if they look it up at all), but they are very likely to look up "Giant Spider" by "Spider, Giant".

A Shark By Any Other Name
If an index entry would reference the same creature, it's not included. If you look up "Shark, Great White", then the index entry for "Shark" will point you in the right direction. "Shark, Great White", "Shark, Hammerhead", "Shark, Tiger", etc. will just clog the index. I've also tried to avoid near synonyms. "Rat" and "Rodent" are fairly close and point to the same entry; including Rodent doesn't feel necessary.

I've tried to include the most common species names and their cross-references. It's possible that readers will look up "Megalodon" or "Gorgosaurus".

Formatting
Instead of directing the reader to flip to a different index entry, I'm going to provide the page # of the final reference. This gives me a bit of flexibility in formatting and saves the reader time.

Where a creature corresponds more-or-less 1:1, or is explicitly included in, an existing entry, I use "see". Where a bit of extra guidance is needed, I've used "as". I may revise a few entries to give a bit more guidance, but in some cases, it feels unnecessary. Anyone looking up a creature by that name should also have a general idea of its form and abilities.

Sigbin by Ash

The Alphabetical Index of All Monsters

The first column covers entries in the book. The second column is cross-references. The formatting will be significantly adjusted to fit the book. Blogger does not like tables.
