Rather than have races gain a +2 bonus to a characteristic, I prefer to have them grant a reroll. Elves, can reroll their Charisma scores and pick the higher result. It makes them, on average, prettier, but it doesn't lock you into the classic "orc = fighter, elf = wizard, dwarf = paladin" builds of later editions.
